When Christ came into my life; when I was “born again”

  • John 3:6-7

6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'

the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ joined Himself together with my spirit, and my spirit became one with His Spirit

  • I Corinthians 6:17

But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

My spirit was absorbed (but not dissolved) into His Spirit, His Spirit was absorbed (but not dissolved) into my spirit, and the two, His & mine, became one spirit—yet each with its own separate identity and still very much two distinct persons, the divine Christ and the human me, and yet at the very same time the two literally becoming one spirit.

At that point, by a transaction of God’s response to my faith in Himself, I became “in Christ,” Christ became “in me,” and I entered into the “mystery of God”

  • Col 1:26-27

26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints.
27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

My spirit was integrated into His Spirit & His into mine, although each still remaining two separate and distinct persons—the divine Christ and the human me—thus becoming one spirit. When that happened, all that was his became mine because I became, and am now, one with him, not figuratively or symbolically or metaphorically, but as a literal fact of space & time reality. My spirit is now as much one with His Spirit

  • I Corinthians 6:17

as my spirit is one with itself. And His Spirit is now as much one with my spirit as His Spirit is one with Himself. His Spirit now lives in me as literally as I live in myself and my spirit lives in Him as literally as His Spirit lives in Himself. One is just as real & true & actual fact as the other. Therefore, for me to ever again ask Jesus to "be with me" or to invite the Holy Spirit into my presence would be on the same par as asking my own self to "be with me" or even for Christ to ask Himself to come into His own presence. His Spirit and my spirit are now one spirit, and one can never come any closer to himself than he already is.

When my spirit was born again, my spirit was infused with the life of Christ in the person of His Holy Spirit

  • John 14:15-18

15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

  • Rom 8:10-11

10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

I did not receive a thing or an it or a jolt of spiritual juice or power that jump started and
resurrected my dead spirit to life. What my dead spirit received was Jesus Christ and
Him only. God gave me nothing less than Himself in Christ in me

  • John 14:6

6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  • John 17:20-21

20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  • Col 1:27

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. My spirit was born again

  • John 3:1-8

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.
2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."
3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'
8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

because my spirit received and became one with the Spirit of Jesus. The life I received was Jesus himself—the Life. My spirit received life because & only because my spirit received the Life—Jesus in the person of His Holy Spirit

  • John 14:6

6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Furthermore, the eternal life I received was not just a someTHING, but was indeed a someONE—Jesus Christ

  • I Jn 1:2

The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

  • I Jn 5:11-12

11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

  • I Jn 5:20

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true-- even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

And when He came into my spirit, He joined himself with my spirit and we two became one spirit

  • I Corinthians 6:17

But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

Therefore, from that point on Christ was in me (in my spirit) and I was in Him (in His Spirit). All that was His became mine

  • Rom 8:16-17

16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.
17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

  • 2 Pet 1:3-4

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

  • James 2:5

5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

when I became identified as one with and in Him because He became mine, & even so much more than "mine," as if He were merely something or Someone that I "possessed." He not only became something that I possessed, but someone that I became ONE with by His Spirit becoming one with mine.

My present and my future are as secure as is His because I am fully identified with & one with Him. The only way I will not go to heaven is if Jesus Himself will not be there, because where He is I am and will ever be

  • John 14:1-3

1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

Therefore, I am crucified with Christ

  • Gal 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. because His crucifixion has been inherited by me as my crucifixion (see footnote #1 below).

I am raised with Christ

  • Col 2:11-12

11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,
12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

  • Col 3:1

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

because His resurrection was inherited by me as my resurrection

  • Rom 6:2-8

2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--
7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

His life and everything in, about, through, and around it is now my life. In fact, He Himself is the source of my life

  • Gal 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

& even IS my very life

  • Col 3:4

When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  • John 11:25

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

His past is my past. His future is my future. His inheritance is my inheritance

  • Eph 1:18-19

18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe

  • Col 1:10-12

10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

  • Heb 9:15

For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-- now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

  • 1 Pet 1:3-4

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-- kept in heaven for you,

I am now seated at the right hand of God because Christ is seated at the right hand of God and I am in Christ

  • Eph 1:18-20

18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,
20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

  • Col 3:1-4

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Where Christ is I am because of my oneness with and in Him. I am now an heir of God

  • Gal 4:7

So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

and a co-heir with Christ

  • Rom 8:17

Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Why? Because I not only inherited all that is His, but I inherited Him, & even more than that—I am now one with Him. I have everything of His—all of his riches, promises, inheritance, etc—because of, and only because I have Him, am in Him, & He is in me. I have it all in Him and in nothing else

  • Col 2:9-10

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

and there is no need for anything else because everything good from the Father is in the Son. And the Son is in the Father

  • John 14:10

Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

I am in the Son

  • I Jn 5:20

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true-- even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

the Son is in me

  • 2 Cor 13:5

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-- unless, of course, you fail the test?

and we are in the Father

  • John 17:20-23

20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:
23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

My identity & inheritance is now fully in Him. I can now identify with & rest in what & who He is

  • Heb 4:1-11

1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.
2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.
3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.
4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."
5 And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."
6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience.
7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;
10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.
11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

Because of my identity and oneness with and in Him, what is his is mine and can be claimed by me as long as I abide in Him and His word abides in me as I seek to glorify Him by bearing much fruit

  • John 15:7-8

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.
8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

I have His mind

  • 1 Cor 2:16

For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

  • John 15:15

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

his life

  • 2 Cor 4:10

We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

  • I Jn 5:12

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

have been equipped with everything I need to do his will

  • Heb 13:20-21

20 May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,
21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever

and have even become a partaker in the divine nature of God

  • 2 Pet 1:3-4

4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

and empowered by Christ in me who can do far beyond what I can ever ask or imagine

  • Eph 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

As a country preacher said, "You got all there was to get when you got Jesus. You ain't gonna get no more 'cause there ain't no more to get."

Therefore Paul can say, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20)

and that “you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col 3:3).

And these mind-boggling claims are not in the least figurative or symbolic or metaphorical, but literal and real & practical & for me to experience by faith. They are as they are, & are as real as Christ is real. When Jesus Christ walked on planet earth, it was His Father living in Him who did His works through Him

  • John 14:10-11

10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

  • Acts 2:22

Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

And now I am to live like Jesus in this world

  • I Jn 4:17

In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.

  • 1 Pet 2:21

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

realizing that just as the Father lived and worked through the Son, He also calls me to allow Him in me “both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phil 2:13);

  • Phil 2:12-13

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-- continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

  • 1 Cor 15:10

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them-- yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

Jesus taught the same truth recorded in John 15 when he said, “I am the vine and you are the branches.”

  • John 15:1-5

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Which is the plant? Can we pin-point where the vine ceases to be the vine and begins to be the branch? That is not possible. The vine and the branch are one, just as my spirit & Christ's Spirit are one. Just as the tree and the branch in my back yard are one, so is the Spirit of Jesus (vine) one with me (branch). We are one. WE ARE ONE!!! Oh, the glory in that divine truth.

Now I can see that all of the references in the Bible to “Christ in me” and “me in Christ” are all true, so very true and real and practical and rich and more than I can ever imagine or conceive.

And how has the revelation of this truth changing me? First I realize that I am a threepart whole of spirit, soul, and body

  • 1Thes 5:23-24

23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

Next I ask the question—am I primarily a body with a soul and a spirit or a spirit with a body and a soul? The way I answer the question will affect the way I live (see Romans 8; Gal 5). I realize that I am primarily a spirit with a body and a soul. So now I serve not "in the flesh," but with my spirit

  • Rom 1:9-10

9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the {preaching of the} gospel of His Son, is my witness {as to} how unceasingly I make mention of you,
10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.(NAS)

  • Rom 8:3-5

3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,
4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

  • Gal 5:16-18

16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

1. The same Greek word for “crucified with”-- sustauroo--in Galatians is used in the Gospels (Mt, Mk, and Lk) re: the thieves on their crosses being “crucified with” Jesus.
